Viajando a... ¡Nueva York! Parte I / Travelling to... New York! Part I

¡Buenos tardes, lunes! Nuevo comienzo de semana, lo que supone un… ¡nuevo post! Esta vez nos trasladamos a nada más y a nada menos que a Estados Unidos, concretamente a Nueva York.

Good morning, Monday! A new start of the week begins, so that means… a new post! This time we are going to move to the USA, more specifically to New York.

Con esto de que comienza a hacer frío y nos vamos adentrando poco a poco en el invierno, me viene a la mente las calles nevadas y frías de Nueva York. Así que, qué mejor que viajar (ojalá de manera física) allí. Aunque para los que aún no hemos estado, nos tendremos que conformar con ver las fotos de sus increíbles edificios desde casa.

As being cold is coming, we are getting closer and closer to winter and I keep in mind all the cold and snowed New York’s streets. So, travelling to NY would be the perfect idea (I wish it could come true). However, people who haven’t visited it yet, we will have to resign ourselves to seeing its incredible buildings from our houses.

Partiremos echando un ojo a este mapa, donde podemos encontrar algunos de los edificios más importantes de Nueva York. Posiblemente el que más nos llame la atención sea el Empire State y es que, ¿quién no se ha fijado en él en innumerables películas? Este edificio fue inaugurado el 1 de mayo de 1931 por el presidente Hoover. Tardó en construirse un año y 45 días. Tiene 102 plantas y mide 443.2 metros. Se construyó en una época de crisis, lo que supuso la ocupación no duradera del dicho y por ello recibió el nombre de "Empty State Building", en el que “empty” significa “vacío” en inglés. De ahí su nombre actual. El 28 de julio de 1945 en un bombardero B25 del ejército americano, un avión pilotado por el teniente coronel William Franklin Smith Jr., se estrelló contra la fachada norte del edificio entre las plantas 78 y 79.

Firstly, let’s take a look at this map. We can find some buildings that are the most important ones there. Perhaps, the one that attracts our attention the most, is the Empire State Building. It has appeared in a lot of films! It was opened th first of May in 1931by Hoover, the president of the USA in that moment. Its construction lasted one year and 45 days. It has 102 floors and its height is 443.2 metres. It was built in a crisis period and it supposed that the building wasn’t occupied, so they decided to named it as “"Empty State Building". On the 28th of July in 1945, as a air attack was taking place, a plane piloted by a lieutenant William Franklin Smith Jr., crashed into the front of the building between 78 and 79 floors.

Otro de los edificios que probablemente también hayamos visto en una infinidad de películas, es la Grand Central Terminal (Grand Central Station) o más comúnmente conocida como una de las estaciones de tren más importantes por su arquitectura. Y es que fue construida sobre la antigua Grand Central Station, inaugurada en 1871; sus obras tardaron diez años en completarse. Con la aparición de nuevos medios de transporte, la estación perdió clientes pero se decidió poner tiendas alrededor de ella. Esto ha supuesto un gran crecimiento económico tanto para las tiendas como para la estación pues es casi una parada obligatoria para la enorme cantidad de turistas que pasan por Nueva York. Llama la atención la gran sala de espera que posee de unos 1100 metros cuadrados y su increíble arquitectura.

There is a building that we have probably watched in a lot of films, the Grand Central Station. It is known because of its architecture and its importance. It was built over the old Grand Central Station, opened in 1871; its construction lasted ten years. As new means of transport appeared, this station became to lose some customers, so they decided to put some shops around it. That meant a huge economic growth for the shops and for the station, because it could be considered the “obligatory stop” that a tourist shoud do in his trip to NY. Its huge waiting room has a floor area of 1100 square metres. That and its incredible architecture attracts our attention.

Nos encontramos con otro edificio abierto al público como es la Biblioteca de Nueva York. Es una de las bibliotecas que contiene más contenido de América y además, cuenta con uno de los sistemas de búsqueda de información más amplios. Es una institución privada que fue inaugurada el 23 de mayo de 1911. Posee tres plantas con 20 salas de lectura, informática y exposiciones. El uso que ofrece la biblioteca a los usuarios es libre y gratuito, aunque no es posible sacar ningún volumen. En cuanto al edificio en sí, podemos observar cómo las escaleras de la entrada son de mármol y está decorada con dos figuras de dos leones y con dos fuentes.

We find another public building, the N.Y. Public Library. It is one of the libraries that has a huge amount of documents related to America, besides it has the widest search information system. It is a private institution that was opened the 23rd of May in 1911. It has three floors with 20 reading, computer and exhibition rooos. The use that this library provides is free, although you can’t take any kind of documents. Related to the building, we can see the entrance stairs that are made by marble. There are two lion statues and two fountains.
