Some days ago, I was reading the newspaper and suddenly, I found an article which was about Alvar Aalto, a Finnish architect. It attracted my attention and I decided to read it. I have read something about him lately but not too much, so it was a great chance to learn more about Alvar.

This architect and designer, who was born in Kuortane in 1898, was one of the most important celebrities in the 20th century. He was influenced by Le Corbusier while he was studying Architecture, so that was reflected in his constructions. Making our lifes easier was his main aim and he kept it mind and used it in all of his creations. Paimio Hospital (1933), Viborg Library (1935) and some Finnish pavilions for international exhibitions in Paris (1937) and in New York (1939) were some of his first buildings. We can also find some of them that are not in Finland, such as the Art Museum of Bagdad (1958) or a skyscraper in Hansaviertel (Berlin) (1957).

He was interested in furniture, too. So, he made a three legs stool, lamps, deck chairs, a Savoy vase… All of them had something in common; the material, wood. Although the Savoy’s material was fiberglass, originally his mould was made using wood.

In all of his designs, he considered very important the sense of sight, hearing and materials touching. That was how Alvar Aalto linked the light and space with human beings.
